Frequently Asked Questions

My doctor referred me to Dr. Donnellon for a low vision evaluation, who do I call?

  • If you can travel to a regular office, please visit Dr. Donnellon at her private practice Walton and Becker Eye Care in Oxford, MI. Phone number is: 248-628-3441.
  • If your mobility is limited and/or you would rather do a mobile low vision exam, please call 248-733-4433 to set up your evaluation.

What is included in your mobile eye examination?

  • Our eye examination includes a comprehensive ocular health exam including checking visual acuities, eye motility, slit lamp examination of anterior eye structures, eye pressure measurement, refraction for a glasses prescription, photo of the back of the eye and a thorough dilated exam of the back of the eye.  We can also do problem focused visits as well as comprehensive exams. Our comprehensive exam checks for glaucoma, macular degeneration, dry eye and diabetic retinopathy among many other eye diseases.

What type of homes do you visit?

  • Our doctor can do exams in a traditional home, independent living communities, assisted living facilities, memory care facilities, nursing facilities, group homes and adult foster care communities. Depending on the facility, the doctor may set up in a free conference room, or come room to room, depending on the patient’s needs.

Does the patient need to get out of bed?

  • We can do an entire eye health exam without a patient having to leave their bed or wheelchair.

Can I keep my current eye doctor?

  • Yes! We are here for your needs. Mobility can vary with your health and time. We can send our exam notes to your regular eye care provider and also request a report of your last exam for the best continuation of care.

Do you provide glasses services?

  • Yes!  We have excellent package pricing that includes a frame, lenses and anti-glare coating.  Single vision, bifocal, trifocal and progressives lenses are available just like at regular optical store.  You have the option to add on additional features such as transitions if interested.  We will measure and fit you for glasses the same day as your exam and dispense them 2-4 weeks afterward to make final adjustments.

Do your glasses have any warranty for scratches or frames?

  • Yes, at minimum every pair of glasses come with a one year manufacturer frame warranty and one year scratch warranty. Depending on the package selected, some frames come with a lifetime warranty and two year scratch warranty on lenses.

What other services do you provide for dry eye patients?

  • We have additional services for our dry eye patients including eyelid cleaning and debridement which often is skipped in care facilities. We also offer prescription drug management for dry eye conditions as well as punctal plug insertion.

What insurance do you take for the exam?

  • Voyage Eye Care takes both standard Medicare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, Humana Gold, United Health Care, Mclaren Medicaid, Regular Medicaid and Tricare.   Deductibles, co-pays and co-insurance will apply. Any remaining balances will be billed to the patient. Please call if you have any additional questions regarding your specific insurance plan. We also perform private pay examinations if we do not take your insurance.

What is a refraction?

  • A refraction is the test that determines your glasses prescription.  Typically patients recognize it as the “1 or 2?” test. A refraction is a non-covered service by Medicare.  We will collect the refraction fee the same day as your visit. You can pay by check, cash, credit or debit card.

Do you take vision insurance for glasses?

  • We can file an out of network claim for glasses purchases if you have VSP/Eyemed and DAVIS vision insurance. Your insurance will reimburse you directly through a check in the mail. If you would like to know specific reimbursement amounts please contact your insurance company directly.

Should I have a comprehensive exam or a low vision examination first?

  • If you have not had an eye examination within one year, we would recommend a comprehensive exam first, then a separate examination to explore low vision devices. We need to see what is going on with your eye health, before knowing how to help. If you are already seeing another eye doctor and just need a low vision examination we will request a copy of your last exam so it can guide our low vision assessment.

Is a low vision examination billed to insurance?

  • No, because a low vision exam is a specialty service, we do not take insurance for this examination. Please call the office for pricing.
